09.09.2020 How times affecting our potteryPottery and ceramics have always been a solitary activity if you are working in your own studio or at home. Most potters acknowledge this and often share how they break away from this solitute and keep themselves entertained with podcasts, music, audio books, pets and so on. When the rest of the world had to face the challenge of working from home, for some this meant working in solitude for the first time in their lives. You could say for potters this did not change much, as they are already used to working in solitutde anyway. What was different though is sudden absence of all other responsibilities, social interactions and outings that in the past may have felt like a distraction keeping me away from doing what I like doing the most. Now when all this distraction had dissapeared and we were left with endless free time and alone with our clay and wheels, somehow the inspiration was gone too. Not only the inspiration was gone but maybe most importantly seeing any point in creating was gone too. Instead of using all this free time to create amazing stuff like we always thought we would if we only had neough time, now it was a struggle to force yourself to even touch the clay, because the question about whats the point was hard to answer. But we were very lucky here in Australia and our time alone at home came to an end in a few months. We could all get back out doing our favorite things and meeting our favorite people again. So our pottery classes reopened and we welcomed back our regulars and new friends. We are keeoping distances, practicing safe procedures and changing our way of operating to suit the current situation around us and adjusting as we go so the ability to dream uo new creations and the avility to use our hands to creatte is coming back. Slowly but surely.
